The Modern Haiku Association (International Department Study Meeting) “Kobayashi Issa and His English Translations” (March 13, 2026)

Since the 2018 International Department Study Meeting of the Modern Haiku Association, this lecture by David G. Lanoue—haiku poet and leading scholar of Issa studies in the United States—has been highly anticipated.

How is Kobayashi Issa, so well known to us, read in twenty-first-century America? Dr. Lanoue will speak about Issa’s reception overseas and the challenges and possibilities of translating his work into English.
(The lecture will be delivered in English, with commentary in Japanese.)
