The 5th edition of Japón Tsunenaga Hasekura Haiku Award

About 400 years ago, Hasekura Tsunenaga led the Keicho Embassy, which left Japan for Europe.
At the beginning of his journey through Spain, on his way to Seville, Tsunenaga Hasekura stayed for a few days in a town called Coria del Río, in southern Spain. Some members of his embassy never returned to Japan and remained there for the rest of their lives.
Many people with the surname “Japón” (Japón is the Spanish word for Nippon) live there today. In 2011, the people of Coria sent haikus of encouragement to the areas affected by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
March 11, 2026, marks the 15th anniversary of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
In commemoration of this anniversary and the friendship that unites us, we request haikus in Spanish (haiku written in other co-official languages of Spain, such as Catalan, Basque, Galician, or Valencian, are also accepted) for the Children’s, Youth, and Senior categories. We also request haikus in Italian, French, and English for the Children’s and Youth categories to promote greater and more international cultural exchange.
Categories
Therefore, three categories are established:
- Children’s category : for those born in 2011 or later.
- Youth category : for those born between 2005 and 2010 (inclusive).
- Senior category : for those born in 2004 or earlier.
Please note that due to the organizing committee’s limited capacity, haiku entries in Italian, French, and English are limited to the Children’s and Youth categories.
Application guidelines
Each author may submit between 1 and 5 haikus. These must be original and unpublished and can be submitted by sending them to the following email address:
- A diploma and a gift will be awarded to the winners in each of the three categories. Details about the nature of these gifts will be announced later.
- Participants must provide their name, date of birth, postal address, telephone number, and email address, indicating which category they are applying for: children’s, youth, or senior.
- The contest is organized by the Haiku Prize Executive Committee and sponsored by various entities, including the Cervantes Institute in Tokyo, the San Juan Bautista Museum in Miyagi, and the Michinoku Date Masamune Historical Museum.
- By participating in this contest, participants accept the rules and consent to the publication of their haikus in future non-profit publications about the contest, as well as their presentation in digital media and in materials related to this contest (including prints and postcards).

Hace unos 400 años, Hasekura Tsunenaga dirigió la Embajada de Keicho, que salió de Japón con destino a Europa.
Al inicio de su viaje por España, de camino a Sevilla, Tsunenaga Hasekura se quedó durante algunos días en un pueblo llamado Coria del Río, en el sur de España. Algunos miembros de su embajada nunca regresaron a Japón y se quedaron a vivir en aquel lugar durante el resto de sus vidas.
Allí, a día de hoy, vive mucha gente con el apellido “Japón” (“Japón” es la palabra española para Nippon 日本). En 2011, la gente de Coria envió haikus de aliento a las zonas afectadas por el Gran Terremoto del Este de Japón.
El 11 de marzo de 2026 se cumple el 15º aniversario del Gran Terremoto del Este de Japón.
Recordando esta efeméride y la amistad que nos une, solicitamos haikus en Español （también se aceptan haikus escritos en otras lenguas cooficiales de España como el catalán, euskera, o gallego o valenciano）para las categorías Infantil, Juvenil y Absoluta. También pedimos haikus en Italiano, Francés e Inglés para las categorías infantil y Juvenil para promover un mayor y más internacional intercambio cultural.
Se establecen por tanto tres categorías:
- Infantil para los nacidos en 2011 o en adelante.
- Juvenil para los nacidos entre 2005 y 2010 (ambos incluidos).
- Absoluta para los nacidos en 2004 o en años anteriores.
A tener en cuenta que debido a la capacidad limitada del comité organizador las participaciones de haiku en italiano, francés e inglés están limitadas a la categoría Infantil y Juvenil.
- Cada autor podrá participar con entre 1 y 5 haikus. Estos deberán ser originales e inéditos y se podrán presentar enviándolos a la siguiente dirección de correo electrónico:

- Se otorgará diploma y regalo a los ganadores en cada una de las tres categorías. Los detalles sobre la entidad de estos regalos se darán a conocer más adelante.
- Los participantes deberán indicar su nombre, fecha de nacimiento, dirección postal, teléfono y dirección de correo electrónico, haciendo constar a qué categoría optan: infantil, juvenil o absoluta.
- El concurso está organizado por el Comité Ejecutivo del Premio Haiku y está patrocinado por varias entidades incluidos Instituto Cervantes de Tokio, el Museo San Juan Bautista de Miyagi y el Museo Histórico Michinoku Date Masamune.
- Al concurrir en el presente concurso, el participante acepta las bases reguladoras del mismo y da su consentimiento para la publicación de sus haikus en futuras publicaciones sin ánimo de lucro sobre el concurso, así como su presentación en medios digitales y en los materiales relacionados con el presente concurso (incluido grabados y postales).
