Haiku Contest

Haiku Contest Commemorating EuropeJapan 400 Years Relationship (The 3rd Haiku Award for Japan Tsunenaga Hasekura)

Year of 2015 could be considered as a 400 years Anniversary for the significant encounter and the start of closed relationship between Europe and Japan.

In 1613, a samurai, Tsunenaga Hasekura of Sendai Clan was ordered from his Load, Daimyo, Masamune Date to go to Europe. Tokugawa Shogunate which had an English samurai and a Dutch samurai at that time, helped Masamune to build the ship to go abroad. After traveling to Spain and France, Hasekura landed Italy in October 1615 and was received by the Holy Father Paul 5th in Rome in November, 1615. He also visited Firenze and left for Spain from Geneva, Italy around March 12, 1616.

To commemorate this history, we, the organizing committee of the haiku award for Japan Tsunenaga Hasekura, hold a haiku contest to encourage a much closer relationship through haiku between Europe and Japan. We would like to hold an awarding ceremony in Tokyo in March 2016 to remind his trip to Europe. And also at the same time we would like to thank to European countries for their grateful support to the Tohoku region where suffered the earthquake and Tsunami Disaster. Because March 11, 2016 will be 5th years of the disaster.
